It would only take a few seconds to slide a sofa over in front of the door.
These guys weren't breaking in like a SWAT team with a battering ram..... and, as someone else mentioned, they were high on painkillers.
Another point, I have had knowledge of people who were dying, or had died from cancer.....that does not mean I was known to them.
If it was mentioned in his obit that he died of cancer, one could assume there is a good chance of pain killers still being in the home so soon after the death.
They could have also simply overheard a conversation in a bar or a hardware store, etc. about the situation.
Maybe some folks have more time on their hands than I do.....but I, for one, don't feel the need to "investigate" the situation. I mean, who cares? Someone was breaking into someone's house....she shot him, he's dead... Good for her.
Ok, clearly I am going to have a VERY unpopular opinion here, but couldn't she have shot im in the knee caps? Did she have to kill him?
When you're learning to shoot for self defense, you learn to aim at center mass. With a shotgun there is less aiming to do. She chose the right tool for the job.
In a stressful situation, with a moving target coming toward you at close range, it's unlikely that you'd have time to aim at something like a kneecap and hit it. If you aim at the torso, you're more likely to hit it because it's a larger area and your bullet (assuming you're using the pistol and not the shotgun, since we were discussing aiming) is more likely to do some damage that might stop a man.

I feel so bad for her with her husband having just died, but a good shot to the knees would have stopped him just as effectively as a fatal one did surely?
I guess this is my European upbringing talking, but I just can't get excited about shooting someone to death under these circumstances, 'rights' or no rights.
While I completely understand your discomfort with killing another human being, what you need to understand is that the number one thing you learn when you learn to shoot a gun is to NEVER pick it up just to threaten or scare someone.
When you pick up that gun and point it at someone you have to have long since decided whether or not you have it in you to kill someone in order to protect yourself, otherwise you should not even have access to a gun.
You do not attempt to shoot to wound or you will very likely end up missing and having to face an even more vicious assailant.
In the end, the responsibility for the death of this man was completely his own.

A large number of people in the south have and/or carry guns, hunt regularly and train their children to shoot; very typical here in the South. I commend her!!!
I thought I read the deceased husband was 18 and the picture I saw of him was of a young man----but what does it matter how old her husband was, or how old she is or how old her child is? The fact is she was in her own home and somebody tried to break in and she did what I hope I could do. I think she is very poised and brave, especially for someone so young.

No.

You don't handle firearms very much, do you?

These wouldn't happen to be the same European sensibilities that have permitted numerous slaughters of each other by the tens of millions, would it?
I think she did right by killing him because he sounded like a creep. I came across one news story that went into slightly more detail than most others. According to her mother, the guy encountered her at a rodeo a couple YEARS ago. That's how long she's been on his radar. And then to wait until her sick husband is dead (and not even cold yet) before he attempts to terrorize her by breaking in with a knife, and knowing she's got a newborn baby??
One more sicko off the streets. The world is a better place.
This is the Parentung forum, not the place to debate gun laws. Thanks.
