My kids like the old fashioned books as do I. We tried the Kindle as we are all computer junkies but it's just not the same for us. I know people who love it though.
Three years ago I was diagnosed with macular degeneration and I have not been able to read regular print since then. Without the Kindle I would not be able to read at all. I use the 2nd largest font and it does require lots of page turning but it has given me so much joy to be able to read once again. Even the large print books do not work for me.
My kids love books and I was so afraid I would not be able to model the love of reading to them as my sight faded. They have tried the Kindle but don't like it and they know why I love mine so much. DH even has one now just for the convenience of being able to read several things at the same time. The Kindle is a god send for so many of us.
My husband and I both love our kindles. My son and his wife also have them. My son uses his a lot, especially when traveling. My granddaughter is just 15 months, and likes to see pictures in books.
For art books and other coffee table books I prefer the paper variety, but for general reading I prefer the kindle. It is light, compact, and you can adjust type size. The books are a lot cheaper, and you don't have piles of books to have to lug around and donate.
We still have a large library of bound volumes, even with our strict rule of one in one out. We do have a bookcase full of novels in the guest room for guests entertainment.
We only get two magazines in paper form anymore. National Geographic, and NewScientist. I miss going to Border's Bookstore, having a cup of coffee and looking through various magazines. I might have to get the kindle fire and download a few.
I think that my kids and grandkid will probably end up with a combination. I can see schools going to textbooks on kindle. Just think how much lighter those awful back packs will be. When the computer became de rigueur, it's use was supposed to cut down on paperwork and save paper. That never happened, the kindle will however accomplish this. It also saves energy, not being printed, bound, and carried long distances by plane, train and huge trucks, not to mention housed, air conditioned and dusted.
My older two do not like the Kindle at all. My youngest prefers paper books but he sometimes reads on my Kindle because he likes being able to get books right away.
So far, mine think that the Kindle is kind of cool. But they seem to enjoy playing Angry Birds on the Kindle more than reading on the Kindle.
I can see how the schools could save a ton of money by putting textbooks on Kindle, though. Plus, interactive electronic textbooks could be really interesting...
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Nook color, best thing EVER to happen to books. My kids haven't tried reading a book on it yet so they think they prefer 'real' books, same with DH. If they tried it, however, I know they would change their minds. DH's issue is he hates change, any change. The kids just haven't had time to read a book for pleasure lately.
Love my kindle. I know several schools throughout the country are going to all-kindle textbooks. My friend has a child in elementary school that will be switching to Nooks next year. So its probably something we should all get used to.
