...if he or she decided to drop out of college?

Child is 20 years old, under lots of stress and mental problems (clincal depression and BPD). Kid didn't pass a clinical and--if she decided to stay in school--would take a total of six years to graduate. GPA, however, is a 3.7 after three years of college.

Kid isn't in any kind of legal trouble and has two jobs that pay enough to support a very modest lifestyle. She wants to be a writer, but realizes that writers must work hard to make a decent living and oftentimes need a day job to make ends meet. Kid doesn't have any debt, she is single with no children.

Would you disown this child?

ETA: This is NOT a joke...this is a situation I am in.

Disown a child for dropping out of college? That's absurd to me so my answer would be "no".

I would, however, tell her to write every single day.

Of course not. College isn't for everyone, especially considering at how expensive it is and the burden of the workload.

However most people do end up dropping out of college anyway and the majority of the population doesn't have a college degree.

Most people "should" be able to get a good job at 18 but society has changed this into saying we have to have a piece of paper for everything. Pretty soon, it'll be a requirement to have a degree to push a button.

A 20 year old is an adult and has the right to do whatever he or she wants.

you are a joke of a parent if you are seriously considering disowning your kid for this.

Disowning my own child would not make the situation any better for the both of us. IMO it's best to work as a team to overcome these issues.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe I'M the kid in the situation and that it is my mom who is disowning me?

I am very sorry that this is the case. I think it is horrifying.

Sad, but true. Neither of my grandmothers graduated high school, and both were able to find good paying jobs with very little education.
