Going barefoot is one way to acquire parasites CDC Hookworm It's not as bad as it used to be but still...yuck.
Nothing wrong with a little exposure to germs, parasites, etc. Helps develop the immune system. Hygiene hypothesis anyone?
Oh, and hookworms almost never occur on cement. In my area people are pretty good about taking care of their pets, they tend to scoop and deworm. I worry much more about broken glass than I do hookworm.
I know how it happens. DH opens the garage to get the car out. Offspring yells "Hey Dad, where are you going?". DH mentions random errand, and offspring says "Can I come?". DH never notices the bare feet, until they are pulling into a parking lot. Happened more than once.
But, yes, it's gross. Not because of the child's feet, but because of the store floors.
I don't think it's a rare occurrence based on the amount of businesses with signs saying shoes and shirts must be worn, but, where kids are involved, I personally have had experience with it.
If we are in a public place then my child will wear shoes. If we are at home, we all usually go barefoot.
My dd, now 10 years old, learned a hard lesson when we were living in Utah. She was at a neighbors house playing in the backyard and they had just finished putting raised garden beds in. They used old railroad ties and had to cut some of them. Well, their yard had a bunch of the splintered railroad tie wood and my daughter, once again, didn't have her shoes on and she got a 2 inch piece stuck into the bottom of her foot. I had to take her to the Urgent Care and have it cut out. Needless to say she wears her shoes outside now.
I never put shoes on dd when she was a baby. When she got older and started walking, I started putting shoes on her and she hated them. Even in the middle of winter, she would sit in her carseat and remove her shoes and socks. To this day, she would rather have bare feet, but I would never allow her to go out in public with no shoes. Around our own house and yard, fine, but outside of that, put some shoes on or stay home.
Shoes are a necessary evil in some ways but the idea that people HAVE to wear shoes is silly. The human foot is a beauty of evolution. Nike, not so much.
I am going to continue to go barefoot in public any place it is legal.
For those of you who like to be barefoot, i highly recommend Vibram Five finger shoes. Its like walking barefoot with just a little bit of rubber soles. I bought mine and LOVE them. I get a lot of compliments on them.
They have different styles for what you want to do... hiking, running, general walking. They also have kids sizes too.
I make my kids wear shoes out in public. Pavement is very hot this time of year, and who knows what gross stuff is on the floors.
