13.... what fun! DH and I were plenty embarassing to our girls at that age. Especially Dad with his corny jokes. Then they went to HS and that changed. We were still embarassing, but in addition had become just plain stupid. From what I could tell, I got stupider with each year they spent in HS. Some sort of reverse education apparently happens to you while they're learning things. But, then something even stranger occured when they went to college. I got smarter! It was great. No classes or tests for me, but clearly my intelligence was growing along with theirs. My advice and council was even sought out by my previously "know it all" offspring. They're now out of college and from what I can tell, my intelligence level is holding steady.
Hilarious, well written and insightful take on why we parents are so "ridiculous, embarrassing or annoying" to our barely-teens.
My favourite bit:
I also think the movie "Thirteen" with Holly Hunter is amazing, and required for parents who are serious about raising their kids to be safe and well-adjusted.
