MissFR is starting kindergarten this year, and she wears a uniform.

I can't wait to go school shopping.

Guess that'll wear off in a few years.

I remember a few years back we were shopping at Kohl's and there were masses of Hannah Montana clothes dirt cheap. My girls looked at them and out loud said "Why would anybody want to wear clothes with somebody else's picture on it?" A woman with her arms full of the stuff heard them and had a puzzled look on her face and slowly put all the garments back without saying a word. I guess what she heard made sense to her and she reconsidered.
I had NO problem buying clothes for my kids if they had a celebrity's face on it.

What difference does it make? If you hate Hannah Montana buy Disney stock and have the last laugh. (Personally I think it's sad that the mother you described might have spent MORE money to get the non-Hannah T-shirt. She could have put what she saved towards their college books. Or booked a massage for herself.)

Right now I own three Larry Fitzgerald T-shirts that have his face. Dreads and earrings and all. (He plays football for the Cardinals.) He visits sick kids in hospitals, goes to Africa to work on water projects, travels the world to fit kids with free hearing aids, cries when he talks about his late mother and prays on his knees.

I'll go count my Disney T's but you might want to sit down before my report comes in.

Gold Toe holds up a little longer but not by much, but they seem so overpriced. We've had a heck of a time finding socks for our boys that last longer then two months or so. It's awful.
We have had good luck with Under Armour socks. They are somewhat expensive but they last well.

You should have told your daughters that what they like isn't necessarily what everyone else likes and not to be so judgmental.

Being in Texas, we also are good to go until probably October.

However, I just spent around $45 at the thrift store. I got.....

9 yr old son-4 pairs of jeans, 2 T-shirts, 1 collared short sleeved shirt, 5 long sleeved shirts and a blue jean jacket
14 yr old daughter - 3 pairs of jeans(one with tags still on it) and 2 long sleeved shirts and an Eddie Bauer jean coat.

We're good to go for the most part.

Son has a new pair of shoes he has only worn a couple of times this summer and daughter has 3 new-ish pairs of sneakers.

Because you are only young and silly once. Foor goodness sakes let your girls just let loose and wear a Hannah Montana t-shirt (or whomever!). I promise it will not cause the decline of Western civilization as we know it. And your daughters have a thing or two to learn about why one would wear a t-shirt with somebody else's face on it. I have 2 t-shirts with Nelson Mandela's face, and one with Steve Biko's face, and I wear them with pride. If some kid made a disparaging remark about them I would be somewhat less than impressed, and compelled to give them a lesson in history and civil rights.

Yep. I remember when I was a little kid and my mother bought me a tee shirt with Fonzie on it. I LOVED that shirt.

Learning should never be confined to the classroom.

Loved uniforms! They weren't necessarily cheaper, but they were easier.

No more back to school shopping here, as the boys are in college. They seem to get a tshirt for every campus event possible. I think they choose what they will attend by what the shirts look like. We still buy sneakers, and if they ask, pants for the cooler temps, but since we are in the south those requests usually coincide with holiday gift giving.

I am impressed with the people making use of thrift stores. My youngest loves a Goodwill hunt.

Wow, that's rather rude. IMO, it's important to teach our kids that just because we like clothes a certain way it doesn't mean others are weird for not liking them that way. What if you were shopping with your girls and someone looked at the stuff you had and said "why would you wear THAT?"?

I have a master's in marketing as well, and I taught my kids that there's nothing wrong with paying extra for the brand name- sometimes brand names really ARE nicer and higher quality- however, sometimes they are not and it's wiser to spend the $40 dollars on four shirts, instead of one. To each their own.

Anyway, usually I don't do big back to school shopping with my kids- they wear their summer clothes until the end of September anyway, so usually we'll just buy a nice outfit for the first day if they want one, and replenish the wardrobes throughout the year as needed.
