This is an old thread that someone felt the need to revive.
Apparently studies show that spanking is pointless but the issue today is that many parents don't do much of anything when their kids misbehave. I see a lot of oh, he/she was diagnosed with " insert condition that is excuse for bad behavior " and that's why they act like a jerk ".

Too many people think a diagnosis is an excuse. It is not; it is targeted direction explaining the specific ways in which you need to work HARDER to discipline your child, not carte blanche to let them run amok.
There was an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry was dating a woman who had a little monster of a son. She kept insisting he was "on the spectrum" and Larry finally said that maybe the kid is just an a--hole. LOL
I still questions some of these spectrum disorders. So many more people with learning disabilities as well.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder is the worst "diagnosis." We used to call that being an entitled jerk and dealt with it.
