We mostly just do rec teams for the kids. We did have my son in baseball but it was a pretty bad experience. The rec team was seeded with the travel team kids who played year round and all the non-travel kids were relegated to outfield positions and never got a chance to try other positions. My daughter was on the travel soccer team for a bit but when her grades really started slipping due to the time requirements, we pulled her out. She wasn't too heartbroken and frankly, we didn't enjoy the intensity of the travel team sports. She gets her socilization, exercise and the joy of a team sport in rec soccer and really enjoys that. Next year, she wants to referee and we support that.
If any of my kids had really expressed an interest in being on a travel team (and actually made it), I would support them. None of them have really shown a huge interest and I'm not going to push it either. My friend on the other hand has really pushed it and made her kids try out for all the teams and keeps them going year round. For her daughter, it has backfired since the daughter now refuses to participate. Too much pushing and not enough desire on the child's part.
