Great article. Someone posted it last year, and I sent it around to everyone I know who has kids.

Video of a young boy drowning (but is eventually saved) This shows us what drowning looks like. it is not scary when you know he is saved. Please listen to Dr. Pia.

A victim can be passive or aggressive victim. When ever in doubt pull him or her out. When I was a lifeguard I'd much rather have the paranoid parent than the parent that is not watching at all.

Yes, was in a boating situation once where someone fell overboard. Moderator Cut. Fortunately we were able to drag the guy out of the water before he croaked.

We saved a young fellow , too deep out...from drowning one day..His own parents couldn't swim and save him, so we did. ...I don't even think the childs parents knew he was drowning until WE became concerned...then they started freaking out...All I can say is WATCH your children, and if you can't, at least put a life jacket on them....especially when you're on a very crowded beach where it's so easy to lose sight of them...even if it's only for a minute.

Thank-you for these links and videos.

Regarding "what we see in the movies" vs. what really happens, drowning seems similar to a heart attack...in that the symptoms aren't as dramatic or obvious as we probably assumed they'd be.

Scary, but so important to be informed.
