As the father of a 22 year old who has moved out of the country... listen to "Cat's in the Cradle" regularly, or put the lyrics where you can see them every day because one day they are born and the next day they are gone.

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, Dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son
I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin' home son
I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then

I hear ya my friend

I know you must miss him terribly!

Try to be content in the knowledge that you must have prepared him very well for him to be ready to wander so far from home

Which is why while all my friends are off playing golf, I am at home teaching my son to burp and spit and distinguish the UPS truck from the FedEx truck, etc.

That song depresses the heck out of me - but it is SO true. Mine just moved about 8 hours away for college and is loving his new life.

I now look back and question everything I did. Did I do enough for him to still want to be part of my life as he embarks on his own?

Crap. Don't make me cry.

Well, since we're on a crying jag, here's a song for the young men out there - the opposite side of the coin:

Mike & The Mechanics - The living Years - YouTube

Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door

I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thoughts
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid that's all we've got

You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talkin' in defense

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts

So Don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different date
And if you don't give up, and don't give in
You may just be O.K.

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say

I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

Say it loud, say it clear
Say it loud
Don't give up
Don't give in
And don't know what you can do next

Totally identify with this mushy stuff. I just dropped off my son at Kindergarten and was about an hr late for work because of it - well worth it, it's always a blast walking with him to school and seeing all the mayhem and his crazy excitment and his friends and him running around and showing me his cubby and seeing him run into his classroom. Man I love that little frustrating dude.

And that Living Years song...I was the biggest oppositional idjut A hole with my father. I have no idea why, he was awesome and loving and supportive. A great person, I'm so angry and upset with myself. He died in my last yr of college. Before I graduated, before I married, before I went to grad school, before I bought my first house, before my son, and before I had a chance to realize what a complete and utter idiot I was, before i had a chance to connect with him. And now that I'll be 40 in a couple months, it hurts bad. Been a long time but the pain hasn't gotten better for me with time. It's actually gotten worse because the older I get the more I get. I need a drink.

Can't decide if this is a good or bad thread.

This made me cry.

It's been one year (last week) since my dad died and I used to put him off like that. I miss him terribly.
