Every year for Channukah I make prints of the highlights from the previous year to send out to everyone, including my grandma who refuses to use a computer. It usually ends up being about 50-60 photos for the year.
I use shutterfly (put all pics on there) and share the albums or use the share site (it's private). The real advantage is when they have sales and you can get a photobook or prints really cheaply. You can also send prints directly to Walgreen's or CVS, so if my mom wants a picture printed immediately, I do that.
Facebook is bad, for all but occasional photos because their privacy settings are always changing and they can sell your pics (depends on the privacy setting and terms).
I use Dropbox since the files are way too big for e-mail and I tend to be slow about printing hard copies. Works well, and the recipient does not need an account.
I made a free wordpress blog and post pictures whenever I can. I rarely write anything, just upload a picture and publish. Anyone can see the site if they have the URL but it's not published anywhere so the only people really looking at it are family/friends.
If they want to get updates they can subscribe to the blog, which sends them an email containing the picture whenever I post one. That way I don't spam people that aren't interested - they have to choose to follow the blog. People can also leave comments and can scroll back through any of the older pictures.
1) You can install picasa on your PC and upload/backup photos to the cloud
2) Install G+ on your ios or android and any picture you take can be set to auto upload to the cloud (lose a phone/no problem)
3) once on the cloud they are not visible to ANYONE but you
3) my parents are in a google plus (along with some others) circle called baby photos. I share the pictures I want to share to the circle. They then get access/can view
The above gives some security (i.e. they have to be in circle to get the link).
Twitter is public, so I wouldn't use that
Dropbox and Flicker would probably do the same thing as Google Plus. . though Google gives you TONS of free space
The other benefit of the cloud is a backup. Your house burns down (and your phones) your photos are still safe as can be on the cloud.
