I guess I just don't see this as a big issue. If it's something that makes financial, family and emotional sense to them, then what does that have to do with anyone else?
I know many young adults graduating medical school presently with student loans between $450,000 and $480,000. If my children expressed an interest in studying a subject that would leave them with such exorbitant loans I may consider various options to counter that.
Where are these schools that cost $80k/year or more, not including interest?
It said that the parents earned a "mid six figure income". That in and of itself makes them a very, very small
percent of the population. And the fact that they earn this income by being professional photographers, an occupation that can be based anyplace, makes them even a tinier minority of a very tiny minority.
Give me a career that earns my family a half a million dollars a year plus unlimited time to travel as part of my work (I'm assuming) and I bet that I would be "pretty well balanced" as well.
The original post by the OP had nothing to do at all with somebody making a mid-six figure income with unlimited traveling abilities. The OP was asking if you would just pack up your bags, and move somewhere else.

The reality is the OPs first questions " your thoughts, or would you do this" make an anecdote of a family member who did exactly what the title of the thread states completely relevant. It is interesting to see how there are many ways to move with ones child and many reasons to do so.
My reasoning has never been a because-I-said-so situation. You might remember my posts from the "5 year old violin?" section. All of that was backed by proof, inductive reasoning (funny but true) , and common sense that people sometimes need reminded of. Many of the posts in this entire section are illogical. I can't believe how many mature and experienced former/current parents would defend having children with nothing, for example. Now you tell me which one sounds more illogical. More so on topic to what you said, yes, the other poster's posts were irrelevant to the original post, and it's gearing a bit further away than it should be. That post should have been saved for a discussion about higher education in a high class scenario. In this situation, as you stated, the best situation would most likely be not move, especially since no financial situation was given in the scenario, therefore, the middle 50% must be assumed until additional evidence is given.
Yeah, the medical field isn't too rewarding financially these days. You can't apply the 18th century in the 21st century. If you want good money, get into technology!

There are actually people who choose the field of medicine for altruistic rather than financial reasons.
I think it's sick. These parents need help and their kids need to get away from them. Yeck!!!!!!!
