My son is will turn two in May but he still hasn't said a word. He interacts great and responds to people. He understands much of what we say to him and in all respects is a really happy little guy. Just isn't talking. Should we be concerned?
Some kids need more time than others, especially boys. My cousin's son was close to 3 when he started to talk, but from the minute he started he couln't stop! I wouldn't worry too much, but if it really bothers you talk to his pediatrician.

If hes responding and interacting with others I wouldnt worry but have his hearing checked..but I wouldnt worry too much...
It cannot hurt to contact early intervention. He may be a late talker, but something else could also be a problem. You do not need a referral for early intervention. You find out where they are by asking your pediatrician or looking on this website: ECTACenter.org : Map-Contacts Finder by State
Does he babble? Does it sound like he is speaking a different language when he does, but it still sounds like conversation? If so, I would be less worried than if he is mostly silent.
Hasn't said a word that you can understand or hasn't said a word period? If he doesn't make any sounds I would be worried but I would not worry too much if he is making sounds just nothing that you can understand yet.
I started a thread very similar to this a few years ago about my youngest son. He was 20 months at the time and not talking. He started talking just after his second birthday. He is now 5 1/2 and is very bright and is doing well in kindergarten.
If he is making eye contact and interacts well with people, he is probably ok.
Hey thanks for all the responses. He does make noise and grunts at times, and he does make sounds. He has said "ma-ma" and "ba-ba", but I don't think he has connected those sounds to us as his parents. I think his hearing is normal because he sings songs back to us--not the words but just the melodies. I just wish he would at least say ma-ma and ba-ba ij the proper context...
Kids will start speaking at all different times. Boys, especially, tend to develop verbal skills later. This is even more true if there are older siblings. I would check with his pediatrician, just to be sure, but he's probably just fine. My son babbled and vocalized, and had a handful of words, but really didn't speak with any sort of regularity until he was 4. He's almost 19 now, and still just a quiet kid. He doesn't feel the need to talk unless he has something to say.
Is he babbling and making noises? What does his pediatrician say?
