Please help me settle this debate. Would you say that it's wrong to come into the house and give your kid a spanking for absolutely no reason whatsoever and rationalize that it was for something that they may or may not do in the future?

Do you want your employer to give you a write up? Because I am sure you did do something against policy or will soon.

I have done things against company policy, including surfing the web on company time. They can try to write me up for it, but it'll be one cold day in hell before I sign that ****!

Of course it's wrong.

You may speed in the future; therefore, I will write you a ticket today, payable at the courthouse. Ridiculous.

And very counterproductive, because it will only teach the kid to be dishonest and hide things better.

Edited to add if the kid is going to get punished for something not yet done, what then is to prevent the kid from doing it? He or she might be thinking, "I'm getting punished either way, so I might as well do it."

Yes.

Hitting your child for something they haven't done yet is even worse than hitting your child for something they have already done.

Agree. Terrible. Great way to make your child fearful.

They'd probably grow up to be an a-hole too.

Are you looking for justification for your actions?
