I can't decide if I should give my 10 yr old a cellphone. It is common graduation gift. Will I regret it?

It is a common graduation gift for kids "graduating" from 5th grade?

Where is this?

Hmmm, does your 10 year old say that "everyone in his class is getting a cell phone"? Or, do all of parents say that "Yes, we gave our child a cell phone for their 5th grade graduation"?

I think my youngest was going on 11. We offered him a phone so we could get in touch with him. He paid for an upgrade out of his own money.

I wouldn't. A 10 year old child does not NEED a cell phone. But even if I did, I certainly wouldn't get a smart phone (because it would be too hard to police.) They do not need that either; a simple flip (trac) phone will do in emergency - you don't even have to have paid up service for the phone to call the police.

Agreed. I have no problem giving a 10 yr old a basic cell phone for emergency use. But at that age, skip the bells and whistles, they are not ready to handle them.

I waited until my son was graduating elementary school. It’s easier in middle school to have him be able to text me.

We are a Cell Only Family,

When my F/A son moved in @ 9yo I got "him" a cell phone, He did not take from the house until he was in Middle School, and only if he would need it that day for activities pickup or something.

I think 8th Grade he would take it to school daily, and Definitely when he was in HS.

We moved to a new state 2 years ago and my daughter was entering middle school here which starts 5th grade. She was 10 almost 11 when we decided to get her a cell phone a few months after school started because most kids here do have phones and it was allowing her to connect easier with new friends. She does walk from school sometimes and now that she's 12 she is home alone sometimes as well, so it's also used for safety. We can see what she's doing on it and we also have parental controls for safety. We are also a cell only family so we do not have a house phone.

There's a big movement to "wait until 8th". My daughter is 10 and does not show enough responsibility for a phone. She can't keep her room clean, she would never be able to keep up with something so small.

We opted not to give my 11 year old a cell phone.. We have prepaid one that he uses when necessary. He looses pencils all the time... Not ready for a phone.
