We (DH, I, and his aunt) are giving youngest grandson a set of three more Tonkas for Christmas this year...an excavator, a bulldozer, and a steam shovel. One from each of us. You're not kidding they're expensive, but he likes to play with his trucks outside on the driveway, so they should take the wear and tear for years. He already has a Tonka dump (for loading and dumping buckeyes) and a Tonka cement mixer (which he likes to fill with mud and dirt). We make sure they're hosed down and dried so they don't rust.

Consider that plastic is a bit safer. When my son was a toddler my husband was supposed to be supervising him while I showered. Husband was distracted by our daughter for something or other. I stepped out of the shower to hear son wailing. I went downstairs to see what the problem was. His face was covered in blood. He had some how hit his forehead with the big metal Tonka truck and had a cut. He still has a slight scar from it 20 plus years later. That was the last Tonka truck I bought for him.

I have to say, when I see "they aren't made well like they used to be" about anything, I roll my eyes.
