My four year old daughter gets so worked up that she throws things and hits everyone in the family. My wife and I remain calm and hold her down when she starts hitting and throwing. I am nervous this anger is abnormal as opposed to a stage. Has anyone had experience with this? This morning she started hitting everyone with her doll including our 2 year old. Please share stories as I am getting worried. Her tantrums are about 2-3 times a week. Usually under an hour, this morning it went a couple hours. I should mention she goes to pre- k and no issues. Same with neighborhood kids

Tantrums shouldn't last for hours or even an hour in my opinion. I'm sorry, but it does not seem normal for a 4 year old to be having tantrums 2-3 times a week for hours.

How are you holding her down? I recall one method I used was to sit on my knees and have my child sit on my lap while I had my arms around her or him. I also made sure I was eye level with my children when I reprimanded them and made sure they looked at my face.

Is this behavior new or has she always been like this? If it's recent, something is going on in her life to cause it. I hate to say this, but children that are sexually or physically abused will act out physically.

I think it's time to speak to her doctor about the issue. What is normal is wide ranging, but the frequency and the length of her tantrums is a bit outside that range.

This IS your issue, as this is where she learned this behavior. You need to nip this in the bud. Be the parent, NOT her friend. Good luck. (Just wait until she's 13...)

Are you saying she possibly learned this behavior from friends? I do not follow, what do I need to nip in the bud? What can I nip if I do not see? Talk to the teachers?

Didn't learned this behavior from her friends.

No problem at school, so teachers aren't going to be able to help you.

Start with her pediatrician. It would be worth it to have her tested for disabilities.

The problem is mostly likely inconsistent parenting and not setting limits. However, until you speak to her pediatrician and tested for disabilities, you won't know for sure.

My questions are (1) how do you handle the introduction of her sister - did she feel left out. (2) How much time do you and your wife spend with her daily? (3) Does her get special activities alone with you or your wife?

The tantrums would bother me for sure but otherwise I dont think it's that unusual to have a kid who behaves at school and then doesn't behave at home. The problem is unfortunately that she feels comfortable enough around you to act out. It also sounds like you arent really disciplining her for what she is doing (aka time outs, taking something away). If she is able to behave at school with no issues then I would think that she is capable of behaving at home, she just doesnt want to.

If the tantrums are lasting a more than 30 min i would check in with the pediatrician.
