Encouraging independence in toddlers, as TV entertainment (parents, children, university)

Interesting idea for a television program.

And probably pretty cute. I'd rather watch that than reality-TV of adults being humiliated.

This wouldn't fly in the USA because the USA is much more dangerous for children than Japan. My long-time friend moved to Japan due to a deployment at Okinawa and she was blown away by the cohesiveness of Japanese society.

The local community council--there's not really an analogue in the USA--contacts the parents of every single child, maps out their route to school, and then briefs the shopkeepers, households, etc. along their route. The businesses along a child's route to school actually log each kid's passing. Once, their elementary-schooler went home with a friend, instead of on their proscribed route. Before my friend even knew their child wasn't home as planned, the community council, police, and school had contacted her to see if the deviation was planned.

When she said it was not they consulted the route plan and found the child within twenty minutes.

So those toddlers aren't really unsupervised. Everyone in the village is raising them.

Of course, there's also a downside to everyone in the village being all up in your business, as you can well imagine.
