My kids have always given some sort of gift and thank-you note to the teachers they really enjoyed having. I try and let my kids pick out or make their own gifts as it seems more special that way. But, I do think about how many trinkets and doo dads a really awesome teacher must get every year, after a while their home could become cluttered and cramped by all of the gifts, so I do try and encourage my kids to get or make their teachers something practicle and/or disposable in some form, like gift cards, plants, home made cookies/treats, picture frames, or even things like home made pillows or pillow cases, or a small wall hanging quilt.
Thanks for all your input. In future years, when the ids are old enough to help bake cookies or make something, we might go for that. For this year, I think I'll give the teacher a card and a gift card to Target for 20 or 30 dollars- that way she can get something useful or frivolous for herself, as she wishes.
