What they want and what is realistic and what they are willing to do to work for getting what they want are all very different
Mine wants to design video games and be a comic book artist and be an animator. He also wants to live in cartoons and live in other realities, so I dunno... we'll see. I also know he gets fristrated easily when what he wants doesn't come easily or instantly, so getting to his goals may be another story. For all I know he'll be flipping burgers awhile until he figures it out. Hope not but at least he'd be working, I suppose.
Personally I think a stint in the military would straighten him out, but I'd rather wait for the war to be over.
My oldest waffled for a while about whether to be a teacher or a nurse and in the end she chose teaching and just finished her third year of doing so.
My second knew from early on that teaching was it for her and just finished her first year.
My third, 11 yr old daughter, is heavily entrenched in anything science related. Most recently she wants to be a paleontologist, however it never varies away from science.
My son, 6, on a paper at school said he wanted to be an ice cream man. haha But if you ask him he'll tell you that he wants to be an MLB player.
From age 3 wanted to be a neonatal specialist and research scientist. She had numerous books and studied the human body and childbirth constantly until age 13. Since then, she has decided her calling is psychology because since age 11 she had kids as old as 18 asking her advice on relationship issues and parental problems. She's had quite a following since.
Her goal isn't to sit in an office and listen to people's problems all day, but to profile or analyze for a world organization (she's also into languages).
Son, 6: For the last six months, it has been a Paleontoligist (I can't even spell it!). From age 4-6, it was a rocket scientist and/or astronaut. Before that it was a "Big Goalie" (huge hockey fan!)
Son, 2: When asked, he says "Elliot" (his name). I guess it is good he wants to be himself...
Son - 12: Wants to be a rockstar (he plays guitar) - With all of his future plans (cool trucks, motorcyles, etc) he better be a successful one!! He has also mentioned a metal fabricator, crime scene investigator, and a doctor.
Daughter - 10: Besides a mom, she wants to be an orthodontist, singer, actress or model! I have always said she should be a comedian, because she is hilarious!
I misread jturr's thread at first (What do you want your kids to be ... ) and thought I'd start this one. How old are your kids and what do they want to be when they grow up?
13-year-old girl: an actress or famous on YouTube for her animated cartoons
11-year-old girl: a teacher
5-year-old boy: a ninja or "a good guy Storm Trooper"
10yo boy - Astrobiologist or something scientific that requires a PhD. (I think he would do well in math and the ivory tower/surrounded by brainy people thing suits him well - he can be quite intolerant of others who don't meet his impossible standards).
7yo girl - Veterinarian (and on her off days she wants to teach at a Vet school). She just loves animals and is very outgoing and friendly.
6yo boy - Firefighter (I can totally see this happening) I can also see him following in his Dad's footsteps (Dad does CSAR in the military).
DS (19) Is studying carpentry, but would also like to use his art, maybe by doing tattooing.
DD (17) Law enforcement. She would like the Sheriff's Department, or the FBI or OSBI (Oklahoma's FBI counterpart), or US Marshall service. She also toyed with the idea of being a storm chaser, but I don't think she could handle all those heavy duty science classes.

Carpentry and art? Get him a scrollsaw. He could build cabinets and scroll door panels in wonderful patterns and pictures.
