A friend of mine is looking at prices for tutoring for her children. She is willing to pay whatever it takes for a top notch tutor. This made me wonder, how much are parents willing and/or able to pay for a tutor? I was looking around for the heck of it and geez, it's a lot! I know the going rate for different communities would vary, as well as experience and education of the tutor, and probably the age of the student and if it's a specialty subject. So how much would you be willing to pay?

It depends on the subject. Back 10 years ago when I tutored kids in grade 5-9 as a HS student and a college student I tutored math, science, and musically on the saxophone. I had charged $10 an hr back then...lol probably more now:P

My son did some specialty tutoring as a student in HS a few years back. He charged $20-30 a session. Depended some on the age of the student and how advanced they were.

I've tutored Spanish and doubled babysitting-tutoring in reading, language arts/literature, and all of the social studies and tend to make between 20-40 an hour. I'd accept 20 being that I'm only currently completing undergrad but parents often pay more.

I think it would depend on what the primary issue is. There is a line where I say mea culpa in dealing with education and I have to rely on someone else. If it is a case of just extra time on a subject then I will not pay over $20. If it is a case of this is a building block that my child did not get and I cannot recognize it and it needs to be assessed then I have to and am willing to have someone else come in and diagnose the problem. I think how much I am willing to pay is dependent on what they are offering and how they assess. I need to know we have a goal and I want it up front and reasoning. If I have to depend on someone then they better be worth it.

I think it also depends on where you go for tutoring. A Sylvan, Huntington or Kumon learning center is going to charge more because you're usually getting certified teachers to tutor. If you're paying a friend or someone's high school student, you should probably pay less. Then, you do get what you pay for.

When I started looking around for a tutor for my daughter, I was recommended some teachers at our elementary school. The going rate at our school is $75/hour. All the teachers agreed on it. I thought that was crazy! The librarian said she charges $30/hour. A few local tutors/teachers in the community charge $50/hour. We ended up using my friend's son's 1st grade teacher from another school in our district and she charges $40/hour.

Also depends on the level of tutoring. My $40 tutor was a retired math teacher - tutoring a high school student. I thought it was VERY reasonable. She is booked solid needless to say. I was hoping to get my DS in as well but it's a bit late. I might give her a call anyway. DS has never really had trouble in math but things start to get trickier at Alg II/Trig.....
