I can see limiting them due to how fattening they are, but limiting them because of 'possible cancer concerns' is nothing but media fearmongering.

My mother keeps telling me to avoid all of the hot dogs. I thought there was more chance of cancer if you grill them or like them when they are charred?

I sort of wish there was a small healthy farm here where I could shop for produce and meats.

I heard if you eat hotdogs, always drink orange juice with it. Something about the vitamin C helping cancel out the nitrates of something....

Hormel Natural Choice deli meats are nitrite free...still probably not great for you bc of the fat and sodium, but less likely to be carcinogenic. It is easy to find and tastes the same, about the same price.

That is what my pathophysiology teacher told us back in 1994. She said she had her kids drink OJ when she gives them hot dogs for lunch.

Most of the lunchmeat I buy is very lean. What (besides things like salami and bologna) lunchmeats are high fat? I use mostly ham, chicken breast, and turkey to make sandwiches.

My son doesn't eat meat, apart from chicken or (rarely) bacon. His lunches are usually cheese or peanut butter based.

We don't eat hotdogs (except for the dog). Personally I love salami but I don't buy it much, though it is cheaper than the lean turkey I get for myself.

Everything in moderation.

Thanks for this info! I don't normally buy processed or lunch meats because of the nitrites in them! I'll have to try this brand.

Processed food and hotdogs are fast and easy but they are not healthy!

I don't feed my children the hotdogs from the can - only sausages that are very, very good quality. I usually need to know the Butcher. I also try to avoid processed meat. The stuff is NOT good. They scrape all the meat they can from a chicken or pig, then squash it all together to make this processed yukky stuff!!! If I buy ham I buy the good stuff - but I generally don't like pork. I buy a big chicken and use it for Sunday Dinner and for meals and sandwiches. Or I give them cheese sandwiches for school, or marmite or honey.
But it is so difficult to know which foods to use sometimes. Keep it fresh as possible I would think, and keep it in its natural state - i.e. NOT processed.
