We are heading into an era of a "virtual library". Are you a teacher???
Do you have no concept at all of schools and parts of this country that are not online? That's wonderful that the students YOU teach and YOUR children have access to all of this. Where do you live? Do you understand that there are parts of the country that are remote and do not have access to internet. And even if they did, they may not have the equipment to utilize it.

Not every school is online at present, but I do think that is the future of education.
I think that all kids benefit from being in a college prep environment, where standard American English is taught, and it is assumed that all kids will go to college. I don't like to patronize anyone. Oh, and who needs libraries anymore? Everything is online, and nearly all schools in the US have internet and computers.
It may well be the future of education, but what you said was this. "Who needs libraries anymore?"
Plenty of children. Who have as much right to an education as your children and students who have everything available at their fingertips.
"Nearly all" may be good enough for you to disregard those who have less...but those children are entitled to an education as well.
have one in the family---imo--there will always be a need for libraries
I love libraries, really, I do. But the argument is that with an online library, you have access to many more books, with much more current information. I do love to hold a book, but the future seems to be much more electronic, and really democratic, when you think about it. A physical library is incredibly expensive. A virtual, online library is cheap- a computer and internet connection.
Perhaps I was not clear. What I want is to MAKE SURE the poor are educated because I want them to have every possible chance in the world. And it's not a matter of being prejudiced. It's a matter of fighting discrimination against the poor in this country. I want no child to ever be held back by "the system" just because they are poor. Or a minority. Or their grandfather didn't go to an Ivy League.
Given that this thread is a one-hit wonder from 2009 and has gotten completely off topic ...
