It's been 22 years ago now that I changed it.And yes, of course everyone needed to call me by my new first name.I worked in a business where I went by my first name and I saw many clients a day, so it took awhile for people to get use to it,but everyone was great about it. I started dating my husband after my name change. My family was great also.I talked it over with my Dad before doing it to make sure he felt ok about it.

I'm sure it would have been torture to be a child named Donald Duck after the creation of Donald Duck.

I never could understand that if you had a last name say, like Duck, Stump, Watt, Deck.....Why wouldn't you change it? So it is the family name?, it is stupid and sounds stupid.
Plus the kids probably make fun of it.

I could never figure that one out. My friend had the last name Watt, and every time the teacher would say what is your last name, he would have to reply, My last name is Watt, instead of just saying watt.....

My Mothers first Bf had a stupid last name as we learned in life, thank heavens she didn't marry him but chose my father instead....no we have a long ethnic last name, and that works for me..... hahahahahahahahhqhq
because I would have seriously changed it when I was 18. i just hate dumb last names.

I know a woman who changed her name as an adult and everyone, including her family, calls her by that name. It seemed odd when I first heard about it, but I can't think of a reason why it shouldn't be done. People change other things they don't like about themselves--noses, boobs, sex. Changing a name doesn't seem that odd when you think about it.

I would definitely make an effort to not give my child one of the most popular names of the year/era.

But no one can predict the future. We can try all we want to avoid the stigmas of popular names and odd names, but who knows what associations will crop up as the years go by. My parents thought they were giving me a great name.....thirty years later it has come to be associated with a different ethnicity and gender! And worse, if I google my name (first and last), the top results are of a serial killer. My parents obviously didn't have intend for these things to happen, they just did.

Michael, David, Matthew, John, Thomas, James, William, Christopher, Andrew, Joseph.... They're all classic names that age well. That's why they're popular.

Especially with boys, I think going unique poses more problems than sticking with a top 20 name.

I have a very common name with a very unusual spelling and I love it

I've always had the name Odette in my head for a girls name, Dita for short. Unfortunately, my lovely hubby wants something more common/traditional....so I guess since we're nowhere near having kids, we'll just have to duke it out until then
