I don't know if my parents regretted the name they gave me. I don't want to give out my name on a public forum, but I will say that every year there were about 5 of us all with the same name - and sometimes even with the same first and middle name - in the class and we had to go by nicknames or "Jane B., Jane T. Jane D.", etc... I always wanted to change my name.
I'm wondering how many "Bella's" there are going to be... I'm so tired of that name. (Tired of the Twilight hype, too.) Bella Bella Bella. Sheesh. I wish people were more original. Violet and Lily are becoming pretty common as well. We gave our boys unique names. So far they are the only ones in their school with their names, which we like.
Our neighbor's family names all the girls born into the family after rare flowers or precious gemstones. It's pretty sweet!
quote: "My kids have traditional, but not exceptionally common, names. No weird spellings. No regrets here!"
I think that's the way to go as well. I've heard that a good test is this when pondering a name:
Pretend your child- now grown up- is somewhere in public where there is a loud intercom- a hotel or convention center maybe- and his/her name is loudly announced. Will they be proud or embarrassed to hear it? Is it a grown up, dignified name for a (potential) professional? Will six other people answer to the name? Is it a definitely male or female name so the caller won't be confused?
I regret that I let my husband talk me out of the name Alyssa for our daughter. The name we compromised on is so common that she always had at least one or two other girls in her class with the same name, and she hated that.
Funny thing is that my son's name is extremely common too but he thinks it's hilarious. He joined a club exclusively for people with the same name, just for laughs.

LOL - my son's name (first AND last!) was used as one of the main characters in a movie (marketed towards teens) several years ago and the movie setting was near where we live. He got a kick out of that for awhile. His first name is pretty common but our last name, while not unusual, isn't one you hear every day.
