If you're still considering Lancaster County investigate Denver. It's about as far north in the county as you can get and Route 222 and the PA Turnpike are seconds away.

Wyomissing and Mt. Lawn are great towns and close to Reading. Maybe give some thought to Temple, which has a ton of stores. The school district is pretty good as well.

If you're going to commute from the Exton area to Reading prepare for a long, sometimes very trying ride. The Turnpike and Route 422 can be adventures, especially when it snows.

Good luck with your search.

I completely agree with you.

Are you working in Reading? If so then you're passing up quite a bit of great( and cheaper) real estate closer to it to have a longer commute. Do you want to live closer to Philadelphia? Exton is very built up with a lot of sprawl. But it does have a good location to nearby attractions. Pottstown's suburbs range from the mostly rural( north and west) to the far more suburban( east). There are great communities literally just a few miles away from Reading with school districts that give up nothing to good school districts in neighboring counties.

Yes I am hoping to be closer to Philly. But, I have heard of Pottstown. I just have had mixed reviews. What do YOU think of the Pottstown/Boyertown area?

Please go spend a day in Exton. The traffic is terrible. Getting anywhere is a nightmare. I spend at least 2 days a month there and I can't wait to get back on the turnpike and head back. I would take Sinking Springs or any Reading suburb over the Exton area in a heartbeat.

thesearch,
We live in the Lehigh Valley (which I love) because we work here and there are good schools. However, my husband is a season ticket holder for the Eagles and additionally goes into Philadelphia about four times a month for work. We use the PHL airport often. It's not a bad day trip at all, just an hour from our house. That does not mean that commuting is feasible.

We've lived in Chester (Downingtown), Delaware and Montgomery counties. They are nice to visit, but I would never want to live there again. In fact, my husband commuted one year while he worked up here and we lived in Delaware county. Between construction, general traffic and then bad weather his hour commute could take an hour and a half each way. It's not the distance that makes it bad - it's the volume of traffic once you get within 45 minutes of Philadelphia, i.e. near Exton.

You might also want to consider some places in Berks County. The cost of living is a bit better than in Montgomery or Chester counties. Look into places like Amity Township, Exeter Township, Oley and places like that - depends on what community activies are important to you and whether you want a rural or suburban area.

just curious... do you not want to look at the suburbs surrounding Reading? and if so, does it have to do with the city's reputation?
I ask because we too, were in the same situation when we found out we were being re-located here.
Reading?? really??
I can tell you, after spending months researching the area and school districts, we are happy where we are and my husband's commute is no more than 15 minutes. (that coming from an almost 2 hour commute ONE WAY, every, single day..). So he is extremely happy!
The city of Reading has it's flaws, as they all do, but the surrounding areas are very nice.
Wyomissing is beautiful with a very short, short distance to West Reading which is trying to become a very nice, walkable "downtown" area... not large, but nice shops & restaurants.
West Lawn & Sinking Spring are also nice, family friendly areas and within the Wilson School district which is one of the top rated districts in the Berks County area.
I have lived here for almost 2 years and never gone to the city itself except once for dinner & it was very good.

Housing prices can vary, we live in a beautiful neighborhood, some established homes and still some brand new ones, open lots.

So, if it does have to do with the city's rep, you may want to reconsider and look closer to the area to avoid the commute.
