Records posted online Friday show more than 1,700 exemptions -- including hundreds of bars -- have been approved under the state's smoking ban. Smoking will be allowed in all of those places.

Good, I'm glad there's a choice. Put a big sign up outside: Smoke Here, No Smoking Here. I currently live in NJ. We don't have that choice. After the smoking ban passed, my husband and I stopped by an American Legion Post for some lunch one day. There were a half dozen veterans, older guys killing time in the bar area. One by one they went outside to have a cigarette.

As I watched this, it occurred to me that there was something very wrong about these rules. This was supposed to be their club; they should be able to make the rules. It was a pretty big building with a bar/dining area and two banquet rooms. They could have chosen a smoking room. These were guys who fought in WWII and Korea. They had to go outside? There's something very wrong with that.

I agree they are veterans,

I always felt a non smoking section and a smoking section was fair, as non smokers in line didn't care where they would be seated.

Oh well, i don't want to make this into another anti-smoking topic

Thanks for the post

I know this is an old thread, but the link which lists the bars where smoking is allowed no longer works, and I tried for a while to find a list on Google. Does anyone have a good link, or is there some general rule to guess by looking at an establishment? For example corner bars that have wings, would they prohibit smoking since they sell food?

Whether they can allow smoking is based upon how much of their sales are food, not sure of the exact percentage of sales but the cutoff is something like 15 to 20%.

It's a stupid law, if a bar is popular for their food then they would have to make a choice between selling food or allowing smoking.

I thought Pittsburgh had a total smoking ban (regardles of State regulations) similar to Philly and NYC.

Philly doesn't have a complete ban. I wandered into Locust Bar last summer and folks were smoking up a storm. It was Quizzo night and the place was full of Nacho chomping students... and a few dangerous looking individuals, LOL.

LOL! Gerania, I was at the Locust's Quizzo a week ago! Three of us formed a team and came in third place out of the bar! :>

Pennsylvania has roughly 2,900 exempt bars -- about 1 out of every four or five. You're welcome to email me for a list which a friend got through an FOIA request. Unfortunately, while the list is truly impressive, it doesn't seem to be in any discernable order... at least none that popped out in a quick examination.

Philadelphia has 102 exempt bars -- about 1 out of every 10 or 20 -- and is exempt from the state law. Phillymag.com provides a VERY nice interactive map and list of Philly's exempt bars at:

Smoking Bars in Philadelphia - Philadelphia Magazine - phillymag.com (http://www.phillymag.com/philly/smoking_bars_in_philadelphia/ - broken link)

I might be heading downtown either Thursday or Friday evening if you're out and about. Send an email! :>
