I saw a report in the Atlanta paper that the NYT says Joe Paterno is on the way out. Not the way he wanted to end it I'm sure. Maybe an excuse by Penn State to replace him? He seemed more of a figurehead than a coach.

If true, his last game against Pitt was a loss. Maybe this will open up a full renewal of the Pitt/Penn State rivalry?

We'll see.....at least from a PR standpoint I don't think PSU could possibly be handling this situation any worse at the moment.

Sounds like it's in the works.

Report: Paterno to leave PSU in wake of scandal - CBS News

Quote:
The New York Times reports that the Penn State board of trustees is planning Paterno's exit from the school in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal involving former defensive coach Jerry Sandusky, according to two people familiar with the university's internal discussions.

Wow! Shades of Woody Hayes and Bear Bryant! These old coaches just sort of flame out.

According to the NY Times, who are stating they got it from two unnamed sources.

But, better reporting on this is coming from the Harrisburg Patriot News, website: PennLive.com. It seems to be continually updated.

Lest we forget, the real story here is a child sex-abuse coverup, not football. If he knew about his defensive co-ordinator's crimes and did little or nothing, I hope "JoePa" spends his retirement inside a prison cell.

I have been reading it since the scandal broke. They do seem to be ahead of the game in their reporting.

Legally, Paterno did what he needed to by reporting it to the athletic director who then covered it up. However, Paterno should have gone to the police once he saw that nothing was getting done.

I'm sorry, but if I'm made aware of a crime (or in this case a series of crimes) I don't just tell my subordinate(s) about it and then walk away from the situation to deflect personal responsibility. I call the police.

According to the NYT:

Quote:
On Monday law enforcement officials said that Paterno had met his legal obligation in alerting his superiors at the university when he learned of the 2002 allegation against Sandusky...Paterno has not been charged in the matter
So at the moment, the police haven't charged him, but he's clearly on shaky ground, legally and morally. It's not impossible he will be charged in the near future, and if he wasn't "JoePa" he might already be in custody. If more evidence of his complicity turns up, I hope he rots.
