We live on Long Island and when my wife retires in 2 years we would like to move to PA. We were thinking that the Philadelphia area would suit our needs but we are always open to suggestions.

Mild winters (relatively speaking)
Near a city with a college (for cultural events).
Good medical facilities nearby.
Not too conservative.
Within easy driving distance of an airport.
Good shopping i.e. Super Markets, Lowes or Home Depot, Dept. Stores, Target, etc.
Decent restaurants.
Houses below $275,000.
Reasonable taxes.

I would appreciate the names of any cities or towns that come close to our criteria.

Thank you.

Hmmm...near Philly?
Newtown is very nice, but housing could be a problem there b/c condos go for about $200,000 but it is a very safe area and the drive to the airport is about 40 minutes and it has nice shopping, decent weather (as far as PA goes), and there is a community college close by and larger universities in the city. (about a 40 minute commute as well)
Doylestown is also nice...
Oh, and there is Abington...I think that would be a wonderful choice. Penn State has a campus there, it isn't too far from Philly, safe, and great medical care. Lots of shopping. Beautiful area.

twinma,

Thanks for the reply. I am not restricted to the Phil. area it's just that someone I know thought that I would be able to find what I want near there. I am open to any suggestions.

Then may I suggest State College...
University with lots of cultural things (Penn State is located there so you have all major sports, museums, art galleries-all on campus-concerts...)
Nice hospital
Good Housing
Lots of jobs
There is an airport-it is not a major one, but they have it
snow can be a factor in Dec-March, but that will happen in PA and it isn't THAT bad
Lovely place to live...lots of shopping
