If the online source I checked is accurate, it does not appear that much development has taken place yet in this area of NW Pennsylvania. It looks like there's been plenty of activity in Butler County, but not further north.

Is this about how the actual situation stands?

Are there any indications that a future rush in Crawford or Erie Counties can be expected?

There will be many more "dots" on the fracking maps for Erie and Crawford counties over the next few years. Here is another resource for you to check out:

Natural gas drilling is nothing new for Northwest PA, but the extremely deep (6,000+ feet wells) are relatively new to the area. The abundance of shallow wells from the past in Northwest PA I believe is one of the main reasons there has not been more recent activity when it comes to "fracking." While the reserves are far from depleted in Northwest PA, the estimates are not as high in Erie county specifically so the drilling has been a little less prolific. As they start to drill deeper at tap into the Utica shale, I think there will be more drilling in the Erie area. This will more than likely take some time though because of the cost associated with it and the current price of natural gas is relatively low. If you are looking for a a rural area in Crawford or Erie county and you want to stay away from fracking, I would highly recommend you use the maps and try to find a spot that has a less reserves than some of the top producing areas.
