In mid July my husband and I will be moving in with his parents. We will have to put our stuff in storage. We have a 1 bedroom apartment. We're only storing a bed frame, head board and foot board, a dining room table and 4 chairs and probably 20+ medium and small boxes. The dining room table comes apart. We have other furniture, but that is either getting sold or being trashed. The location of the storage unit is 10 minutes away from our place. The movers charge $480 total. Now if we moved everything ourselves, we would have to do it gradually. We might need to enlist the help of family members. But The other stuff that we have is very heavy. Obviously movers could do it with ease. It would be work for us.

So what do we do?

If you hire movers, that's one less thing to worry about. What is your budget like? Will this be a big expense for you?

Sounds like 3 or 4 trips with a pickup, you'd have to be nuts to pay someone $480 for that. You're not moving large hutches (been there done that) or pianos (been there done that too). Shouldn't take more than a morning even if you only have on or two people helping you.

If it's nothing that is very heavy, I'd just move the stuff myself. You could also find 2 guys on craigslist to help move for >$20/ hour.

If yo assume 4 hours for 2 guys @ $20/ hour that's $160, with tip make it $180, 5 hours would be $200. If you supervise them, it should be fine. I have done this before in NYC, and you need to supervise.

Call a different moving company or two or three and see if they have 2 guys & a truck or can refer you to the same that does small jobs that are too small to need a moving van. That's how I got my stuff off the truck in PA. It was $15/hr in a small town, but that was a few years ago.
