Can anyone comment on Selinsgrove PA. I know it floods and I do have the flood maps. Looks like they have reasonable home prices and taxes. Town looks quaint and good for a retiree. Comments appreaciated.
Thanks,
Don

Default S.

Selinsgrove has busy, busy, busy Rt. 15 running through it. Trucks, trucks, and more trucks- and everyone who is going N to NY and S to MD is on that road! The Susquehanna Mall is there, and, of course, Wal-Mart. We called it "the strip"- it's a rather long strip mall (Rt. 15), but has lots of places to buy things. Can't say I ever spent a lot of time in Selinsgrove, but it's close to Lewisburg, which is nice. I would keep it on your list of places, definitely. Yes, there are places that flood, but, you are near the river, so, it happens.

I've been to Selinsgrove a few times. It's nice, in a rural sort of way. House prices are dirt cheap as there is little there in the way of a job economy. But for a retiree it might be great!

First, let me comment on the flooding and Route 15, then I'll cut and paste my answer to another post.

There are some areas of Selinsgrove that flood, most notably the Isle of Que, but even that has some places that don't flood. Homes close to Penn's Creen also could flood. The flood maps are in the process of being revised, so check with a realtor, or better yet, the Borough Manager, before making a final decision based on flooding.

Route 11 and 15 run down "the strip" but NOT into Selinsgrove itself. There are many nice neighborhoods just off "the strip" and many nice neighborhoods in Selinsgrove itself. None of them have traffic noise issues due to the highway.

Now, my copied reply from another post:

I think you can't go wrong with Selinsgrove, or the surrounding communites that feed into Selinsgrove schools. Some of these include Kratzerville (where I actually live), Shamokin Dam (where the Kmart and Hoss's are), and Hummels Wharf (also known as Monroe Township - where the mall and Scheetz are).

There are definitely rental properties available. You can check the links to the local newspaper (which has a rental section every day, I believe) and you can also check with local realtors, which include ERA, ReMax, and other big names.

As an independent transcriptionist I type the minutes for the meetings of several organizations in Selinsgrove. I am VERY excited about the positive changes that are coming up in the Borough. Some of these include an improved boat launch facility on the Isle of Que, the reopening of the community ice skating rink, a fitness trail that was added at the town park/playground, and the beginning of a Main Street Manager program to improve the downtown (which is quaint and cute as is, but could use some "oomph").

The schools are fantastic and crime is low. As with any rural area on the "pipeline" between Harrisburg and Williamsport, there are some drug issues, but it's not an "in-your-face" problem. Most of the crime that you'll hear about involves college students who live off campus - parties, drunkenness, disturbances at night, even a few rapes recently, but they were all college-related. The Borough police are efficient and very good at their jobs. They have help when needed from surrounding communities, and the Selinsgrove State Police are just outside of town.

Just be sure when you find a rental that it's not within the "student zone".

Transportation in the area will be improved within the next ten years or so as a new thruway is being built to connect Route 147 to Route 15. It will bypass "the strip" (where the restaurants and stores are), which will cut down on congestion. Our area is growing, with new stores coming soon and new restaurants springing up all the time.

The climate is usually humid, summer and winter. We have hazy summer days and cold, damp winter days. Our snowfall lately has been below average, but that can change at any time. Rainfall is about average, but be careful if you locate near a stream, creek or river. Find out about flooding before committing to anything.

This is a growing and exciting area to be in, now and in the future.

In my opinion, Selinsgrove is the place to be!!

friday traffic on the strip is horendous. we did not build teh bypass correctly teh 1st time. so now some avoid the traffic as much as possible.

in teh general boro- stay oppisite teh college and high school. it is a great place for retirees!

in back of the mall they are building ?800,000.00 mansions, subdivision.

if a flood via the magnitude of 1972 happened- teh valley would be wiped out. i recall someone wrote "we love you wall 1972" on teh sunbury flood wall.

try not to laugh at this one.... but selinsgrove is teh cultural hub of Snyder County. LOL

one item to consider is burn barrel burning. Selinsgrove, Sunbury doesnt allow it. but adjacent townships do. that can smell like burning diapers when down wind.

teh garage sales are really better now that the mall expanded!
