It depends if you opt to get a new plate when you buy your next car. You can opt to carry your old plate over to your next car. If you have not bought a car in a long time, that could explain your "D" plate.

You can get a new plate with a new car? That's new to me, I've always used my old plates, and didn't realize it was an "option".

I ALWAYS get a new plate with a new car, or even a used car. Get it at your tag place or the dealer.

A long time? I bought my last car in 2013. I "opted" to carry the old plate over. Why would you not?

Unless there are tickets, citations, or violations against the current plate that one would wish to conceal, I can't fathom any reason to get a new license plate with every purchase.
