I love stories like this. I love when a business finds its niche. I love when people find something fun to latch onto.

The schlock-horror drive-in that rose from the grave
Many drive-in theaters got a boost during the pandemic. But the scene at the Mahoning Drive-In in rural Pennsylvania is something else entirely.

“There’s a feeling of excitement that I get every time I drive past the Mahoning’s sign and see the huge screen get closer and closer,” said Andrew Ramallo, who drove from his home in Rego Park, Queens. His car was one of dozens with out-of-state plates. In fact, he has made the 100-plus-mile drive from New York to Lehighton a half-dozen times since 2019. “Like visiting an old friend,” he said, “there’s an overwhelming sense of familiarity.”

The Sunset Drive In in Waterford was a porn theater in my child and teen hood. LOL Now it just shows family fare on Fridays-Sundays, with a flea market every weekend.

It's the only one left in Erie County - the others have all been developed into shopping centers, housing, etc. The site where the Peninsula Drive In was is now part of Presque Isle State Park; the site where the Lakeview Drive In was in Harborcreek is undeveloped, but you can see where it was, and in overhead shots can see the outline of the parking area.

That's the story in a lot of places, the theater properties became to valuable for other uses.

The drive-in where I am in Calvert County, Maryland was one such. It was redeveloped into.............the State of Maryland's Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program station for the County. Highest and best use and all that.

The Moonlight in Brookville, PA almost closed a few years ago, the owner said he couldn't afford the new digital equipment. It's still open so I guess he found the money.

There's one over in Cumberland County, as well. It's near Mechanicsburg, I think.

Yes, that's the one I was thinking of. We haven't driven over to check it out, though.
