We are driving over in a few weekends from New Orleans for a day (and night) at the beach. We want a gorgeous beach day trip, that is only a few hours drive away. Is Pensacola the right choice? We'll be staying overnight. Thank you very much for your opinions!!

Pensacola Beach is what you want. Definitely a gorgeous beach. The new Margaritaville Hotel is in a great location. Google Maps shows it being on Sabine Bay but it's actually right on the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks!

Is Pensacola a "cool beach town", as well? Just in case we decide to wander off of the actual beach, ya know.

No, definitely not a cool beach town. It has a nice little downtown area that is worth seeing. There's a nice restaurant on the waterfront called Jaco's that you might check out. Also check out the Seville Square area. Nice park setting and historic homes/church, etc.

Personally, I would stick to the beach. Don't miss the National Seashore sections of the beach (east and west ends). You will see the island in its natural state in the Seashore areas. In other words, no buildings.
