To me, if one has spent months living in South Florida and goes to the FL Panhandle for a visit or move in the winter, then the cold can be somewhat of a shock (relatively). I remember one day it was about 78F in Fort Lauderdale and very bright and sunny. It was about October. I drove up to Tallahassee and it was about 42F with very cold rain. Everyone was wearing jackets. The disparity was very uncomfortable. This is in coming from South FL after weeks in warm weather.

By contrast, when I was an undergraduate I was in the midwest. One December the temperature got to about -15F. I took a flight to Phoenix from Chicago and it was about 62F which felt great. A flight to the FL Panhandle when Chicago is like that would also be warm by comparison.

It's all relative.

Don't mention you are from NY and no problems.

Yes, winter is rough. But it just makes spring that much more enjoyable!
