Hello,

I'm in the process of looking (gathering) information on my Dad's dad. I'm from Canada, and know that my Dad's dad (Joseph Langan) was born in St.Johns ND. I've inquired here in Canada and they told me to ask city hall for leads.

But I can't find anything on the Web to start with. Can someone please direct me on my quest.

Thanks

Clinton

I followed a different line in the same family, because (1. there are no records of the Joseph listed above past 1900 - nothing in any census, military, draft, passport, etc - so he either died or went to Canada before 1910, and (2. an 1884 birth seems too old to be the grandfather of Clinton unless Clinton is a senior citizen himself. So Clinton can you give us an age estimate on your grandfather? If the above Joseph is the correct one, then his later records, if he lived on, may be in Canada.

So anyway... There is a second Joseph Langan - Joseph George Langan- born in the same county of ND who is the son of Vital (above) and (E)lisa St. Germain (born about 1881 in Quebec, Ca and died Dec. 28, 1961 in Montana). This Joseph was born April 19, 1925 and died Sept 26, 1990 in Chouteau County, Montana, buried in Big Sandy Cemetery. He served in the US Navy in WWII from Oct 22, 1944 to June 16, 1946. His ship was the Antigone.

His siblings are/were Paul, John, Ida, William, Agnes, Finley, Ernest, Emma and Pauline. Vital Langan is listed in the Quebec Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection) which I cannot access without paying $299., but since you are in Ca you should be able to.

Clinton, if the younger Joseph is your grandfather, you can request his military records and his Social Security application, which will both give you vital information. I can send you his SS number in private.

Hopefully, one of these Josephs is your grandfather and these posts give you a basis to search your family history.

edit, found an old 1949 address

Clinton, if the younger Joseph is your grandfather, you can request his military records. The SS death index does not state where he died.

If Beechwood is correct, the younger Joseph George Langan (1925 - 1990) who served in WWII, appears to be buried in The Big Sandy Cemetery in Big Sandy, Montana. No other Langans by that last name are seen as being buried there. Big Sandy is about 60 miles over the Canadian border.

So as mentioned above, information you (and your Father if he is still living) may have can confirm some of what was posted by Roberta and Beechwood for you.

Default Sorry - Joseph was his middle name

Sorry about this,

Joseph was his middle name, Patrick was his first name. I've attached his baptism paper, and this is all I have.

Thanks

Clinton

The baptism papers shows a birth date of Dec. 19, 1884 and baptism on Dec. 21, 1884.
The census data shows a Patrick age 11 (born 1889 ?) and Joseph born November 1884.
The birth months conflict so one is an error and it must be the census. (?)
As well as a Joseph (15) and a Patrick (11) in the same household.

Wow not sure what to take on this.

I know that his Canadian wife was Helen Stinson (Brazeau) from Newton Siding (Manitoba) and was born in 1901-02-07. Helene was married to Milton Stinson and then got together with Patrick Langan - they never got married. Now I don't know if Milton or Patrick was first? All of the Canadian information I have (paper \ government) says that Milton Stinson was his Dad - which is why I can't get any other information here.

My Dad and his brother changes their last name to Langan in 1978.

What I do know
- Helene Brazeau was his mother and born 1901-02-07. She was married to Milton Stinson and my dad's last name was Stinson at one time.

- Then my dad and his brother changed their last name to langan in 1978. And the only information I have of his real dad is the Baptism saying he was born Dec 19, 1884.

I'll call some family members and see if they can shed more light on this.

Thanks
Clinton

A link from a Rootsweb/Ancestry site from 2010 -

It references Jean Baptiste Langan and Angelique St Germain as well as Patrick Baptiste Langan born on 12/19/1884.

Good observation of details on the certificate by ElizNJ.
