My grandfather, John William "Bill" Rutledge was born 12/25/1892. My father was born 6/11/1930. There is a half-sister, Leota, born to a woman named Edith. We do not know if Leota is older or younger than my father or if Bill was married to Edith at the time of her birth, although they were married later. We believe that Edith lived in San Antonio TX with Leota prior to her death in the early to mid-1980s. Any help, even just a maiden name for Edith, would really help.
Leota was most likley born in TX or OK. Bill was from the Poetry/Kauffman area.
I have some updated information on Leota's previous locations.
She was living in Jackson Mississippi in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Sometime after that she was in Destin FL.
Leota's mom, Edith, died in Jackson MS, in approx. 1980. At the time of her death Edith was married to John William "Bill" Rutledge but they were apparently separated as he was living in El Paso TX when he died in 1981.
We've been trying to call but there's no answer yet. I'll let you know if this is correct. I had also found this name somewhere else, and another individual sent it to me as well. We can't all be wrong!
Leota Leverich Hayes was my mother.
1. Bill Rutledge lived in Moore OK in the 1920s and first married Deen Leverich, the younger sister of my mother's father, George Leverich. So that he was my mother's uncle by marriage. They were neighbors and my mother and her sister, Nialta Leverich Pepper, addressed Bill's mother as Grandmother Rutledge. Deen Leverich was first married to ? Spencer, but they divorced. Deen had two toddler sons when she married Bill. She died when they had been married only a short time in 1934. Subsequently, Bill left Oklahoma and contact was essentially lost with him; except that my mother's sister, Nialta, was in contact by Xmas card and letters with Bill's younger sister in California, who was 24 years younger that Bill.
2. My Grandfather, George Leverich, died at 81 in ?1965. My grandmother, Edith Anderson Leverich was living in Moore, OK, in ?1975 when one day, Bill knocked on her door. At that time the family learned that Bill had settled in El Paso, had remarried, again a lady with two previous children, had again been widowed and had been told by his Sister in California that his old brother-in-law had died in ?1965. He had driven in his Chevy El Camino to Moore from El Paso approximatly 6 months after his second wife's passing and after discussing with his two step-daughters that six months of mourning was sufficient. Subsequently, Bill and Edith were married at a little church outside of Los Cruces. All of my mother's and her sister's husbands, children and grandchildren and my girlfriend attended and got to meet Bill's family in El Paso. They were still living in the house near Anthony.
3. I remarried in 1979 and spent a week in El Paso as the conclusion to our honeymoon to check on my grandmother Edith. Her mental condition was not good and we moved her to Jackson, MS, were my immediate family lived and were Edith and George Leverich lived prior to moving him into a nursing home in Moore, OK.
4. In conclusion, Bill Rutledge was basically related to my family in one way or the other since ?1932. My Mother, Leota, had known him as a young girl as Uncle Bill and later as a grown women as her Step-Father.
