Okay -- so all the people on this board that think their credit cards and checking accounts should be at no charge to them. And when the banks charge them they should be drawn and quartered for doing so.
Obviously, you all work for free.
Oh -- you get a paycheck?
What about the banks? I realize this is an incredible thing to think, but do you all realize that a bank isn't this big bad EMPTY entity? People work there. And need to be paid. They needs lights and computers and so the bank has to pay for electricity. And the employees need to pee, so the bank has to pay for water. And the banks have to rent places to put all these employees, more money out the door.
And they have to make a profit, so the stockholders are happy, so they can stay in business.
And frankly, since the employees have to listen to all you idiots whining about fees, and bailouts that the majority of banks didn't take and since you all have no idea or interest of how a bank makes money, the bank buys their employees a nice supply of aspirin for all the headaches they get.
Stop whining, bank at small local banks, and put on your big adult panties and deal with it.

I don't think you understand how banks work. Beyond loaning out your money and making money off those loans, they make money every time you use your debit card or use online bill pay or someone from another bank uses one of their ATMs. There are plenty of ways for banks to make money without junk fees or anti-consumer behavior.
As for the bailouts, while it may be true that the majority of banks did not take a bailout, the banks that hold the majority of deposits did.

has any country ever exprimented with a public banking system?
This is basically what credit unions are. Their goal is not to make money for their shareholders. They are not for profit and work for their member owners.
You can always borrow from a fried or down the street. Just remmeebr that they don't go to court too often to collect. Your basically borrowig others moeny for a return. Credit unio are such businesses but they also charge. Nothing is free.
I went into Wachovia * aka * Wells Fargo and the teller told me she knew nothing about there being monthly fees for those customers keeping a low balance in the near future.
Then again, something like that would likely hit the news big time. I guess we just wait. Meanwhile, LOOK for a credit union

Chase told me the same thing when they bought WaMu. Now look... Wells Fargo has already gotten rid of free checking for new customers.
My credit union in Denver changed ck acct to free checking without intrest and removed fancy name, interest probably 50 cents a year like money market. They also changed money market acct. so that if it drops below $10.000 they will charge $10 fee per month ripoff, money market pays next to nothing.I will be looking around and remove funds.Checked CU here in FL
