This is exactly what any for profit business should be trying to do. You figure out what you can and can't get away with to maximize profits.
Including buying out as much competition as possible. Which leaves me to my next comment. Dump the big banks. Join credit unions and look closely at Canadian Banking.
In general, I agree with this. I checked my account and so far, no fee. I will talk to them tomorrow to find out of they are going to implement the fee in my area (sometimes they don't do it in all markets).
I opened the account because they offered me $50 to open an account and another $10 to pay a bill online. But I kept my account with my credit union as my main account. If I find out they're charging the fee, I will simply close the account.

One smaller bank here offers free cookies if you open an account !
And that gave you the rude awakening huh. Well, such charges have been around for sometime now. Check out credit union while you can. Otherwise pay $5.00 of your money or direct deposit. Big banks have huge overhead cost that must be met through any available means!
Wells Fargo is a piece of **** bank...I have never liked this POS bank.
