Thought this was good info. for those who try to guard their personal info. .

Many consumers have no idea that there is no law stating stores need the zip code to complete credit transactions and they are not obligated to comply with such requests, he said. A retailer can request an ID to complete a credit purchase, but it is illegal to record any information from the ID.
“People just do it uniformly,” Valdes said of giving their zip codes to stores. “People think that they are doing it to confirm it’s their card and protect you, but in reality they are doing it for their own marketing.”
I give the zip code for Barrow Alaska. It does wonders for the marketing program..... On muesum i went to I found put the zip codes up on its website where the vistors are from, most were with in 100miles of it. but 1 dot was there the next month for Barrow... When i get gas, the pump ask for my zipcode as part of the credit card verification proceess. It check my CC againts my ZipCode, I guess they figure if someone stole the number they would not know the billing zipcode. But if they got my wallet, the zipcode is on my drivers Lic... So I guess it only works if some one only steals the number....
Yes, I work at Macy's and I really don't give a s.hit about anybodies zip codes. I make one for you, instead of asking.
However, the reason stores ask you is either a marketing tool, to see where their customers live, or if you pay with a credit or debit card, to make sure you are the owner of the card. If you give the wrong zip code, the card wont work. If I had a customer giving me 00000 for their zip, I would not question it. Roll my eyes maybe, but just put in any number and move on.
I pay cash for most things and still get asked for zip code sometimes. I give it as I'm under the impression they want to know what areas most of their business is coming from. I never thought of some of the "conspiracy theory" aspects of some of the previous posts.

People love to believe in conspiracy theory's. But you are right, all it is knowing where business comes from.
When I check out at the supermarket using a CC, there is a panel asking to enter zip code, but there is a "skip" key, which I can touch and just move on to the transaction.
Recently, when I came back from a few months in Mexico and tried to gas up, the pump asked my zip code and I couldn't remember it. I had to pull out my DL and refresh my memory. I don't object to reasonable precautions on my card swipes, because it protects me from unauthorized use of my card.
I'm assuming that people who traffic in stolen card numbers have no trouble mocking up a phony card to go with them, that will swipe. They don't know my billing zip. Any waitress can steal a dozen card numbers a night, but stealing the whole wallet iis a little more strongarm than that.
