I just realized when I got home that I used a Mastercard (which is strictly credit) as debit. I wasn't thinking clearly so when the cashier asked "credit or debit" I said it didn't matter. I used the pin I have for my other card. It went through. How?? I hope I'm not paying some cash advance fee over this. Never had it happen before.
It should be easy enough to check your MC account online and see (1) if the charge went through, (2) if your account was charged a fee for the transaction and (3) if your card is also a debit. Are you sure that you actually used your MC card or is there a chance you used your debit card instead and just thought you were using your MC card? (Please dont take offense; I've done that before.)
It's certainly a good thing that you remembered it. You could have forgotten it and realized it after it got too late. Now, at least you can check it for your satisfaction.
I checked both accounts this morning and nothing is posted on either one. Unfortunately, the receipt only says Debit and the amount, doesn't list the last few numbers of the card used. Doubt I used my debit card since it was halfway back in stack of cards I have. The receipt says it went through; guess it's a mystery for now!
I've been out of banking for a while, BUT -- when I was in banking, if something like this happened, it would shake out in settlement. The transaction would be rejected and show up that night. The clerk would have to try to find it (or he might not look) and then he would have to reprocess it. It might take a week to catch up with you -- OR -- it might be small enough that they might write it off and let it go. That's happened to me -- I've had a couple of gas purchases that never showed up anywhere, but I had the reciepts to prove it.
It shouldn't process as a cash advance. Unless something has changed since I was in banking, merchants don't have the ability to do that. That was something you had to walk into a bank to do. Or write a check to activate.
Credit cards aren't really issued to support us with cash. In the event we need to withdraw emergency cash, we may need to pay an interest as mentioned in our card terms and conditions.
