You are part owner of a company , usually a very small part owner.... .oo1 = one stock in abc corp. as an example .
Also , the company is public and traded on an exchange ie; NYSE

No, the highest number would be how ever many stocks the company has issued. It could be 10 stocks or 10,000,000.

People get confused by "pumpkin pie" as well because that too is using an incomplete term.

Stocks... are stock *shares*.
A portion or "share" of the whole.
