Is a big chunk of this debt related to health care expenses? The reason I as is that I think it would be hard for someone with minimal income and mental issues to secure enough credit to rack up $150K in consumer debt.

If that's the case and the provider still holds the debt, he might check with the state's Department of Human Services to see if there's any aid available.

If not, and he owns nothing of value and doesn't make enough to be garnisheed, there's really no benefit to bankruptcy. He'll just have to understand that he may very well be taken to court over the debt, and that the creditors may harass him for the rest of his life. Most states have a statute of limitations regarding the amount of time that a creditor can use the court system to collect a debt, but in most cases it doesn't apply to direct collection attempts.
