More cases of credit card thieves using “skimming” devices to steal unsuspecting customers’ credit card information are popping up across the country, not just at gas stations, but also ATMs and even restaurants.

When a credit card is run through a skimmer, the small device stores the cardholder’s data. Once the credit information is obtained, the thief can then sell the information or clone the credit card.

If reasonable measures cannot deter such opportunistic exploitation, then reasonable measures should be taken to force industry to switch to less fraud-prone mechanisms such as that used in Europe.

I was just traveling and in Europe they all had the cards with the chip in it. Our system (& cards) seems retarded at this point. I could not use any of the automated machines and had to go in line and have the cashier swipe it on their own machine or sometimes enter the numbers manually and then check id and so on. Felt like I am from a third world country.
