there's one near my house that advertises APR of 390%. they wouldn't be lending at those exorbitant rates if they didn't expect a substantial number of defaults. i suspect many of those people are turning to payday lenders as a last resort.

Default Being free bird

As she's on a fixed income, it would be difficult to pay the monthly required installments, there's no way out, the only thing she can do is limit her spending's and try to save as much money as possible. If she has a good set of friends or relatives she can borrow some from them, if they are true friends they will definitely help her get out of trouble. Well this must be the best way to sort it out.

Here's a good forum with sample letters, etc. I know of a cousin of mine who recently got out of this PDL trap!! What a nightmare but she faxed over one of the form letters in this link and it worked! They gave her additional time to pay, waved any more fees, etc.
She is finally out of it. You do have to follow their formats word for word.
Good luck.

In the UK payday loan companies are pretty unregulated. They charge more than 1000% APR and encourage you to rollover with aggressive telemarketing. They even offer discounts for getting your friends to sign up. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy

I believe most payday places have to by law allow you to skip paying back for two Weeks. And then you pay back in installments.
How to get out of a payday loan would depend on how much you borrow.
I knew someone who got like 10 loans at once and borrowed the max(500)on each.
He had a gambling problem.
One option one could use is the pay some bills late and pay off the payday loans first
I know from experience once you get really sucked into payday loans its hell getting Out!

Only if you don't pay the balance off at the end of the term... if its a one month term then you pay the penalty for not paying it off (everyone KNOWS its a balloon payment and people are choosing not to pay)... You wouldn't say to a bank, I decided to pay less than my mortgage but keep the interest rates the same and don't foreclose... Its only exorbitant because these people typically don't take out huge loans... so that even $1 interest compared to the principal is a LOT... its all in perspective...

Online Payday Loans - Cash Advance
Use payday loans if and only if you need the money RIGHT THEN, to pay crucial bills, and are sure that you will have the money within a few days to pay it off completely. Even then, it may actually be better to make the payment a couple days late, as long as it won't trigger a default. Only lates past 30 days will go on your credit report.
