There’s a lot of good advice on this forum, no doubt. I have certainly benefitted from reading, and asking questions. From some of the messages I’ve received, others have benefitted from my contributions too.
So if you're thinking about quitting your day job to start an online business... I'd suggest keeping your day job while you get started lol! SEO takes a lot of time...........
Off to a slow start but doing well, my google analytics continue to trend up which is great, its just gonna take time. The process is slow as every item needs to have a unique description, I'm selling extremely high end expensive goods not random cheap T-shirts so there needs to be in depth descriptions to help SEO and make customers comfortable. I just paused my PPC campaign, I'm gonna work on getting another 9-5 job, once I have a steady income I'll really ramp up the PPC, it just really starts to add up.
The good news is we have had a sale, which may not sound like that big of a deal for 1 sale, but its kinda like real estate where 6-7 sales can be a great year. If I get to the point of 3-4 sales a month I'd probably be making more than I was at my last day job.
There were some snags I wasn't expecting. Ebay is a great way to get free organic linking, but they are limiting me to just $25,000 a month in listings, this is about 3-4 of my items when I hoped to have about 500 listed. Also Houzz.com wants you to have a physical business address in order to sell on their site, not a residential or a PO box. These were gut punches because all my numbers figured 3rd party sales my first year.
I'm still very happy. Getting antsy to find a job, but the thought of what this business could be in a year or 2 coupled with a day job and a few rental properties really has given me a new outlook on life.
SOOOOO happy I made those financial changes years ago to allow me to pursue this...
I'm always amazed at how many people come here and fight tooth-and-nail against the common sense advice dispensed on this forum. There's always an excuse with them.
But your story is the very reason why this is so important.
One more thing. It really takes three years of hard work to get a new biz off the ground before it really starts cash flowing. Don't be discouraged.
we have been playing around with PPC and SEO over the years. i would say now we are investing more in it than ever. rolling out a brand new web site soon. so far i wouldnt say it has been our best source of new business.
