Started saving in earnest at age 45. Married relatively late (35) and went through years of infertility and surgeries and the adoption merry-go-round all to chuck it at age 45.
We reclaimed our lives.
And while I do have a pension coming - I still saved 25-30 percent of my income because my spouse was a sales person who was always underemployed and under the gun when the Recession came. I have always been the primary breadwinner.
I started at 22 but didn't really focus retirement savings age 30, then "life" happened. Restarted retirement savings again at 35 years when we got married. 15 years years later savings have grown a lot.
Only someone who hasn't lived there would say this.
I am a native of California. I have owned a home in California, I have owned an apartment complex there too. Most of my siblings still live there.
My issue with staying in California is that I have also lived in other places. People who have only lived in California, are subject to 'normalcy bias'. Whereas people who have lived elsewhere have a wider base of experiences to form their opinions on.
My high school graduating class had over 750 kids. At our 25th high school reunion, there were about 100 of us that attended. Most of them still live within a 40-mile radius of our old high school. They have never lived anywhere else, and they firmly believe that where they live is the best palace to live.
I have lived in Virginia, Connecticut, South Carolina, Washington, Maine and overseas. I have owned homes in various other places. I have lived and owned homes in other places, from my personal experiences I chose to not go back to California to settle for my retirement.

Many times on this forum I have seen threads where people compare houses, with their prices and their property taxes. It becomes completely obvious which states are expensive every time that posters go to comparing each other's homes, prices and taxes.
Age 45 started saving via 401k plan
Inherited $$ so am investing it in the house, adding a few bedrooms with the intent to sell it someday.
We have some left so can buy a cheaper place here, even if it is just a forest service cabin to stay 1/2 the year
then a dumpy house in an adjacent county, I suppose. We'll see how it works out.
I am still inheriting more $$ within a few years. Told I am one of 11 but have no idea of the amount except it is "a good amount" according to the attorney. That will help our decision along if we are still living here.

I started making token $50/month investments at 22. However it was when I got full time stable employment at 35 that I went from 10% to 25% (at times) of my income invested first in tax differed and then mixed with ROTH retirement accounts.
