Every day I hear someone complain about the price of gas, and more often than not get into their 10mpg SUV or full size pick up and drive home.
The American public caused the price of oil to skyrocket by their choice of vehicles, but now want someone else to take the blame.
Oil follows the same rules of supply and demand as every other commodity. The average american driver now consumes between 1000 and 1500 gallons of fuel per year. Multiply that number by 2 hundred million drivers and you are talking about a staggering figure.
If the vast majority of people drove cars that got 25+ mpg the cost of fuel would plummet the same way it did in the 80's and early 90's.
The SUV is nothing more than an expensive ego booster. So if your ego needs boosting by all means drive your SUV, just shut up about the price of gas, because you are the problem.
My SUV will crunch your Prius like an ant. (on my way to Starbucks for my $5 latte and then to the gas station, smiling all the way).
I wanted to do my part so i bought a smart car. I felt so un-safe in it that i decided to throw it in the back of my hummer and drive it around that way. Ha ha ha
Several years ago, at least five, maybe more, I participated in a discussion board where some often made negative comments about SUVs. Apparently, even seeing an SUV on the road was an irritant. Seems funny there's little change. Some are still bothered by what other people drive.
I like my luxury SUV. I can afford it, and I can afford the gas for it. It is safe and comfortable and has many bells and whistles. I like bells and whistles. My next car will be a luxury SUV, too, only next time I will get a red one.

At the time I posted that, I had a Cadillac SRX. I liked it very much. Then Cadillac replaced it with the XT5 with even more bells and whistles. So I got one of those. I like it very much, too. I briefly considered one of the smaller Mercedes SUVs, but the salesjerks were rude to me when I went to look at them, so I spent my money elsewhere.
I love when I get out of my lifted Jeep Wrangler with a big steel front bumper at Starbucks and people getting our of their Prius's and Smartcars look at me with disgust. Now that's the true feeling of freedom. I can't help but laugh when all the inconsiderate driver's in their econobox's park next to me and swing their door open into my Jeep. Lucky for me I have steel rock rails and when they realize they just put a crease in their door from not respecting other people's property, the feeling is priceless!
