2 scenarios here: say you had work for 3 1/2 months in the state of virginia and due to the pandemic you were let go and began receiving UI....which eventually ran out and then you began getting PEU pay....... (which is my current situation).
say you have elected to have the 10% withheld for federal and for some unknown reason, virginia state taxes are not with held. if you fall into the 10% tax bracket for federal taxes, is it correct to say that you'll probably owe little to none for federal taxes and will naturally have to pay for virginia state taxes?
what if say you fall into the 15% tax bracket - you'll already have 10% paid so you only have to pay the 5% for federal and any applicable virginia state taxe....did i say that right?
A quick look at VA tax forms at https://www.tax.virginia.gov/sites/d...structions.pdf it appears that VA does not tax UE benefits. You subtract them from the federal taxable income reported to the IRS, on VA Sch ADJ.
